How to collect customer testimonials on WhatsApp
Most customers will say something kind at the counter and then never write it down. WhatsApp is where they already are, so ask there, and make the reply one tap.
Why WhatsApp works for asking
A testimonial request fails when it asks for too much effort: an email that gets buried, a form on a website, an app to install. A WhatsApp message from the person who just served them is different. It arrives from a number they recognise, they read it in a moment they remember, and a link opens straight in their phone's browser.
The tool matters less than the timing and the size of the ask. Ask right after the job is done, and ask for something small: thirty seconds on camera, or two lines of text.
What you need
- Your own WhatsApp number, the regular app or WhatsApp Business app. You send the message yourself, the way you would to any customer.
- A review link for each customer. It opens a simple page in their browser where they can record a video, upload one, or write a review. They do not install an app or create an account.
You do not need the WhatsApp Business API, a Meta approval, or per-message fees. Those are for automated, high-volume messaging from a company account. Here, you are sending a personal message to a customer you have just served.
Step by step
- Ask at the right moment. The best time is when the customer is happiest: the dish just landed, the haircut looks good, the problem is fixed. Same day, not next week.
- Send a short, personal message with their link. Use their name, say what you are asking and how long it takes, and add the link. Templates are below.
- Keep the ask small. "A 30-second video or a few lines" gets more replies than "please write a detailed review".
- Let them choose how to answer. Some people will happily talk to a camera. Others prefer to type. Offering both means fewer people say no.
- Approve before anything goes public. Every submission should land with you first. You choose what is published.
- Follow up once. A gentle reminder after a few days is fine. More than that starts to feel like pressure.
Message only people you have served
WhatsApp can restrict accounts that send unsolicited messages to people who do not know them. Only message customers you have actually dealt with, send the link one customer at a time, and keep it personal. For walk-in customers you do not have a number for, print a QR code instead; everyone who scans it gets their own review page.
Get permission to publish
A customer saying nice things to you is not the same as agreeing to be featured on your website. Ask for consent every time. PraiseClip's review page includes a consent tick ("It's okay to share this publicly") with each submission and records when it was given, and nothing is published until you approve it.
What to do with the testimonials
- Put them on a public page you can link from your WhatsApp status, Instagram bio and Google Business profile.
- Embed them on your website with one line of code, so new ones appear without editing the page.
- Point happy customers to Google. After submitting, every customer, whatever their rating, is shown your Google review link. Showing it to everyone, not just happy customers, keeps you within Google's rules against filtering reviews by sentiment.
Check your field's rules first. Some professions, for example doctors and lawyers, have professional rules that limit publishing client or patient testimonials, and claims about results are regulated in some areas such as education coaching. Check what your regulator allows before you publish, and only publish what the customer actually said.
Common questions
Do my customers need to install an app or sign up?
No. They tap the link you send and it opens in their phone's browser. There is no app and no account.
Can I send the same link to many customers?
Each customer should get their own link, which can be used once. For walk-ins, a printed QR code gives every person who scans it a fresh review page.
How long can a video be?
Customers can record up to 3 minutes, or upload an existing clip up to 200MB. Most good testimonials are 30 to 60 seconds.
What if a customer does not reply?
Send one friendly reminder after a few days. If they still do not reply, leave it. A forced review is worth less than none.
